Coming Soon: The LynLake Brewery!

We reached out to one of the guys behind the very exciting LynLake Brewery, which is slated to open in October of this year in the former Lyndale Theater (2934 Lyndale Avenue S, Minneapolis). Mark Anderson, Co-Founder, and President at Metropolitan Mechanical Contractors, was willing to answer some questions and talk through some of their plans for the space and why they chose this building and this neighborhood.

Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM): How did you decide to open up a brewery?
Mark Anderson (MA): A few years ago, I was introduced to local craft beers by my sons.  Two years ago, a friend of mine, Paul Cossette, and I were having a Surly and talking about craft beers.  We talked about starting our own brewery/taproom.  It went from idle talk to actually doing it.

PAM: What drew you to the LynLake neighborhood of Minneapolis?
MA: We were looking for a neighborhood for our taproom.  We looked at several locations but kept coming back to LynLake.  The people in the area are down to earth and really care about the area.  We eventually found a great space.

PAM: What drew you to the specific building you chose?
MA: The character of the building is great.  It was built in 1914.  The architecture is really fun.  The original brick looks great.  In addition, the location is perfect.

PAM: Are you keeping much of the historic character of the building?
MA: We are not touching the outside of the building except for some minor cleanup.  The interior walls were covered with plaster.  We removed the plaster to expose the original brick  The ceiling has an architectural element running throughout the ceiling area. We are restoring the entire ceiling area to the original condition.

PAM: What can you tell us about the brewery?
MA: We have a 10 barrel brewhouse with six fermenters.  We plan on having up to 10 different beers on tap once we are up and running.  In addition, we will have a taproom located on the main floor with operable windows on Lyndale.  A rooftop patio covers the front half the roof.  It will have great views of Minneapolis.

PAM: What are you most excited about with this venture?
MA: Brewery/taprooms are conversation places.  We are very excited to join in great conversations with people from the neighborhood.  And… can’t forget about drinking great beer.  We WILL have great beer.
