Scenes from the 1971 Milk Carton Boat Race at Lake Calhoun

The Milk Carton Boat Races became part of the Minneapolis Aquatennial festivities in 1971. “Denny’s” Seafair Milk Carton Derby on Green Lake in Seattle began a year earlier, but it’s never been as much fun as the one at Lake Calhoun. The sport has gained popularity and international appeal over the years. Portland added a race to their Rose Festival five years ago.  A milk carton boat regatta has been taking place on the Lielupe River, in the Latvian town of Jelgava for over a decade. In 2011, more than 30 teams use 45,000 cartons to build the Latvian boats.
