Lakeland Hotel (Willmar)

Several older buildings in downtown Willmar have fallen into disrepair and now face foreclosure. The Lakeland Hotel, which has been determined eligible for listing in the National Register, was nominated to the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places list this year along with the nearby Habicht’s Department Store and a former drug store next to the Barn Theater. Each building contributes to the historic fabric of downtown Willmar, but the Lakeland Hotel is the only local remaining example of a “railroad hotel,” a significant building type in this former railroad hub in central Minnesota. According to the Willmar Design Center, the Lakeland suffered a series of unfortunate remodels and alterations. As one of Minnesota’s Main Street organizations, the Willmar Design Center actively supports restoring the Lakeland Hotel to its original condition and saving it from the same fate as other buildings from Willmar’s railroading past.

The Willmar Design Center has organized the 4th Street Task Force to address the building’s future.
